“For we are God’s Masterpiece,
He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,
So, we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
I read one day that God said I am a masterpiece. Immediately, the question popped into my head: How can this be?
I am a nobody!
What is a Masterpiece?
A masterpiece is a craftsman’s best piece of work, a treasure, a classic, a work of art, and a precious jewel.
These kinds of masterpieces, objects of historical, scientific, and artistic value are displayed in museums. These exhibited items stand out on pedestals with spotlights pointing at them. Some keep masterpieces in their homes and set in prominent places such as above a fireplace, on a wall, or a place a visitor may see when they first step in the door.
The process of learning how I am a Masterpiece!
The process God used to teach me how I can be a masterpiece is a hobby I admire, Art Journaling.
I watch artists use many elements to produce their treasures on paper and canvas. The completed product surprises me, they create what looks like chaos, be fascinating and meaningful.
It is incredible how the layers that a design an art journalist will work to make their paper ready. They paint the material by using products like gesso or Modge Podge to give more strength to the paper. Torn paper, paint sprinkles, or some kind of bumpy material adds character. Then a layer of smeared paint, geometrical stencils dabbed here and there, and still more paint, pens, pastels or markers. Many layers are added then dried and again added. For me, these many layers look like a mess, but to the art journalist, the paper is strong, full of character and a perfect platform for their creations.
But I keep watching and these creations turn into beautiful sunsets that come alive with magnificent color, an ocean with waves that come alive from the ugly inconsistent bumps, and what once was a messy paint splotch becomes a seagull.
Many times in my life I felt I had no purpose, mistakes made and the hope of the memory removed. The first layers in an art journal piece are like those negative memories.
These layers do come together with God as the master creator.
God as the master creator I need not erase, but allow His hand to paint and finish my life.
And we know that God causes everything to work together
for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.
That is what God does for us. He takes my mess, (the circumstances) in life and brings out the best in me. There will always be those imperfections, but as we allow His hand to work in my life, I come out of the messes from my past and He makes something beautiful, so there is a reservoir to help others and bring peace and joy into our own lives.
He wants me to be on a pedestal showing how to live with purpose and be a success.
14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket.
Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand where it gives light to everyone in the house.
16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
Story of the Cracked Pot
An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years, this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream.’I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.’
The old woman smiled, ‘Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s side?’ ‘That’s because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them.’
For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.’
