A FATHER’S LOVE
My mother left my father because of physical and emotional abuse. I am two years old. I have no memory of this father. My mother tells me he loved me, but I also hear of the physical abuse he did, such as left me without food, unclothed or a dirty diaper when my mother is at work.
I am sixteen years old this same father came to visit me. He asks me questions that a teen thinks stupid. Questions as: “Do you have any brothers?” and “Do you have any sisters?”
Silly questions that told me my father did not have his mind directed to the correct reality. He knew I had a brother and no sister. I believe the look on my face told it all. But he insisted and informed me he is talking about black brothers and sisters. I finally get it, he is talking about racial friends. I informed him I went to a white school. With my father black and my mother white, I did not feel the impact of racial confrontations or concerns. I looked more like the Mexican race.
In the first hour of our relationship, my father informs me of his racial lifestyle. With his fist held up, he tells me the Blacks will take over the world, therefore I need to marry a black man so I can be a part of the national Black takeover. Okay, so now, I am irritated, this is how a father talks to his daughter? I try to stay calm and inform him I will marry a black man if I fall in love with one. Now, He is irritated, I am not conforming to Black Power thinking, and tells me so.
I am done and words flow: “I will marry a china man and you will have Chinese grandchildren!” He puts his arm up to hit me, but we lived across the street from a fire station and the fireman made a noise. He turns and looks toward them and puts his arm down.
I notice his hand rising up to hit me and I am in shock, I have not lived with physical abuse and not planning on it anytime soon. So, I stopped the visit, I told him I didn’t like him and walked away.
I never see my father again, although he informs me he has a little girl that looks just like me, wants me to meet her, and he would take us to Disney Land for a family outing. I never heard from him again.
Many years later, I find he has left this earth; I have three known half-sisters and I am not interested in meeting with this part of my family. He had time to have other children, but did not have time for me?
I am 60 years old and 45 years later as I read my Daily Word; I find I am to honor my father and mother. How does a person honor a man that has no right to be my father? He did nothing to earn that right and I pray about it, and I decide how to honor my father. I always called him my biological father. It is time to forgive. Instead of saying biological father, I will give him the status of “father” in my life.
After this encounter with my choice, I fly to the area where my half-sisters are for a conference. I decided to text one of them and inform them I am in the area and will meet with one or all three if they choose. The three met with me.
I found God had blessed me with three amazing women as sisters. I loved them and had a connection with them immediately. It was as if I had known them all along.
For me, fathers have always been a person who meant nothing or to put it deeper, fathers represented pain and abandonment. After getting saved someone told me to think of God as my father, I almost quit being a Christian. If God is like a father, I had no use for Him.
One day I pray: Lord, teach me how to pray. This is what he gave me.
Immediately, I felt Jesus looking into my eyes and saying, Our Father. Imagine when the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, and then Jesus in person, face to face, turns and says “Our Father.”
He tells me I am a part of his family; we have the same father
Who art in heaven
Jesus makes it clear, He is referring to His father in heaven, not fathers on earth.
In John 14:9 Jesus tells them who the father is:
Jesus said to him, “… Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. “
The more you understand Jesus, the more you have knowledge of the Father.
Hallowed be thy name
Holy means set apart from any other on this earth. Father God is not comparable to any earthly beings or any earthly thing. He is to be seen and thought of differently.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
God’s will is for this moment, here on earth. We can have heaven: peace, love, and abundance here on earth.
Give us this Day our daily bread
The Lord is our daily provision, we are to ask for the need for the present and not to concern ourselves with the past or future. God provides for the present and when tomorrow comes, he will provide as well.
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
Forgive, even when they owe us.
Lead us not into temptation
The Lord never leads us through wrong paths. He guides us on paths for our good and perfect for us.
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you, to give you a future and a hope.”
For thine is the kingdom, and the glory and the power
For God is the one with the power (to accomplish anything we may need) and the glory (high honor won by great achievements.)
Jesus knew we may have a father that abandons, but in this prayer,
He wants us to know Father God is our replacement. Accept the replacement!
